Why Should I Get My Own Domain Name?

I keep hearing that if you are serious about blogging and getting your blog out there that you should get your own domain and hosting. I know one thing for sure. Having your own domain definitely makes it easier to tell everyone your blog address instead of the long www.yourname.blogspot.com.

Getting a domain isn't expensive at all. I get my domains here at Lowest Domain Rates. I'm just not sure of the need for my own domain and hosting right now. The monthly hosting fees would just be an extra expense. Maybe I'll at least get a domain first. Anyone have any suggestions?? Should I rename my blog?

What are all your thoughts on this subject?

I've been trying to figure out the same thing. Why is so important to have your own domain name? I have heard the same thing and I don't really understand why.

Same boat here too! I get close to deciding to get my own domain and then I get "scared" and stay with blogger.
One of these days.....

I think it depends a lot on where you want your blog to go. If you are happy on blogger and don't want to push your blog into the top, then stay. Your own domain gives your blog professionalism. It gives you more control over the design and what you put on it. It gives it credibility. Think for instance of shopping... think about how you feel about purchases at the flea market versus purchases at Sears. You may get the same article at the flea market but your confidence is going to be higher in the one you bought at Sears. There is nothing wrong with the flea market buy or with Blogger. I have a couple of small blogs here.

If you are going to change though, it's a lot easier to do it early and then you don't lose all your backlinks and traffic.

I would like my blog to go somewhere. I can just get a domaain name for right now though, right? I can just have that domain point to my blogger URL. I've noticed many that do have their own domain name but still use blogger. I'm monetizing my blog with ads and such but it wouldn't recoup the cost of monthly hosting fees, yet!
I've heard great things about Wordpress maybe I should look into it further and see how the free service will work.

Hi,
I think getting your own domain will give you more credibility as a blogger and people are more likely to remember it. I know if you purchase your own domain, you can still host for free on Blogger. So the only cost will be the purchase of your domain.

The least expensive domain service that I have found is at 1and1.com.

It's about $6.00

Hope it helps.

I bought a domain name for my blog right off because it's not that hard to do (especially using wordpress), it gives me more control over the look of my blog, it allows me to use all the nifty wordpress plugins, and I don't fret about losing my content when my free blog host decides to delete my account for some weird reason. But that's just me.
You've got to do what feels right for you. I think buying a domain and pointing it to your blogger blog is a great way to get the easier reference. But what if the name of your blog isn't an available domain. Then you have some incongruity to deal with and a few decisions to make. If you buy your domain when you're thinking up your blog you can see what's available during those stages of the process.

Hi saph... Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment. I also have another blog at blogspot (http://nychicachick.blogspot.com/)but since I was also posting for PayPerPost, I noticed to get more opportunities, most people have their own domain name. So I went with godaddy.com and bought the domain name for a year and a year of Blogcast. If you figure out the numbers per month, it's not that expensive. I think it's worth it if you want that extra income to go along with your blog. Think about it and start small. To buy a domain name is only about $8 a year. Good luck!

I made the move to my own domain name and self hosted wordpress (from blogger) last December and it was an EXCELLENT move for both me and my blog. My blog seems to have taken off since then - beyond what I would have expected and my advertising is comfortably covering my costs.

I find blogger more difficult to leave comments on (and slower).

Honestly, it's the BEST move I ever made.

Mind you, my blogspot blog didn't look as good as what you've got set up here and I think the "look" of my blog when I switched had an effect as well.

Good luck with it all. It can feel like a pain in the neck going through it all but I've not heard anyone say they wish they hadn't.
